Mayoral candidate Alan Henderson released a heartfelt statement following the unexpected passing of Tampa City Councilwoman Gwen Henderson, calling it “a profound and tragic loss” for the city. Though the two were not related, Henderson reflected deeply on a recent personal interaction with the late councilwoman and the impact of her public service.
> “Good Afternoon, beautiful city,” Henderson began.
“I wish I had good news. I am writing about the sudden and incredibly tragic passing of our city's councilwoman, Ms. Gwen Henderson.
We were not related, despite sharing a pretty cool last name. I will say, however, this stings particularly because I just had a moment to speak with her in person last week.
Literally, last week.”
In the post, Henderson expressed regret that their final interaction would also be their last, sharing that he had recently complimented her work during a council meeting and remembered her reply with warmth and appreciation.
> “Like so many other people in her life, I’m sure—there was so much more I hoped to tell her. So much more I hoped to learn from her.
When we last spoke, I mentioned to her I was watching a recent city council meeting she was in and that I appreciated her diligence in working hard to find answers for some of the things I was passionate about.
I still remember her smile in that moment; it was cautious (as you can imagine, given the stakes) but notably warm and receptive.
She gave a very sweet reply, and I let her know that I looked forward to watching more of her work.
And that was it. I was incredibly honored to have even had a moment to connect with her in that short window.”
Councilwoman Gwen Henderson was a dedicated leader from West Tampa, who had served as an educator, business owner, and ultimately, a public servant. Henderson honored her legacy and offered his condolences to her loved ones.
> “Ms. Henderson was from West Tampa. She served her community as an educator, a business owner, and eventually went into public service.
My heart goes out to those who knew her even better than I got a chance to and all of her family.
I pray those that knew her find comfort in knowing she's being well taken care of.”
Henderson concluded with a scripture passage that underscored both reverence and faith:
> 2 Timothy 4:7-8 (NIV):
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness…”
> “A profound and tragic loss for Tampa. She will be truly missed.”
